Former F1 driver Schumacher’s watches fetch millions at auction
Watches belonging to Formula 1 great Michael Schumacher sold for around $4.41 million at auction house Christie’s in Geneva on Tuesday.
The eight watches, including timepieces by Rolex, F.P. Journe and Audemars Piguet, were put up for sale by the family of Schumacher, 55, who has not been seen in public since suffering a severe head injury in a fall while skiing in 2013.
A custom made F.P. Journe watch with an engraved message given to Schumacher as a Christmas present by his Ferrari team principal Jean Todt sold for $1.7 million.
It was estimated to reach up to $2.2 million.
A second customised watch, a Royal
Oak by Audemars Piguet, was sold for $460,541.
Originally scheduled for Monday, the sale was delayed at short notice after Christie’s suffered a cyberattack.
‘Golden Bachelorette’ has been revealed! Fan-favorite Joan Vassos gets second chance at love
Joan Vassos, the hard-luck contestant who had to leave “The Golden Bachelor” early on, will be ABC’s inaugural leading lady on the first-ever “The Golden Bachelorette.”
As USA TODAY exclusively revealed in February, Vassos, 61, was among the top picks for the show following the success of “The Golden Bachelor.” The private school administrator from Rockville, Maryland, was officially tapped to lead “The Golden Bachelorette,” ABC announced Tuesday. The series will air on Wednesdays this fall.
“The secret is out,” Vassos wrote on Instagram Stories. “I’m honored to be the first Golden Bachelorette.”
Vassos, who spent a romantic evening with Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner in last year’s show, became a fan favorite after her heartbreaking decision to leave “The Golden Bachelor.” Vassos eliminated herself due to a medical concern with her daughter that required her care out in the real world.
The new show will be a “second chance at love,” according to an ABC release.
Pink Floyd drummer open to reunion but says no appetite for one
Pink Floyd’s drummer Nick Mason would be open to the idea of a reunion gig but he doesn’t see any appetite for one among his feuding, now elderly bandmates, he said on Tuesday.
The legendary English rock group last appeared on stage together nearly two decades ago, at the Live 8 charity concert at Hyde Park, London, in 2005. |

But the long-running quarrel between the other two surviving band members, Roger Waters and David Gilmour, has only intensified in recent years, becoming one of rock music’s most bitter feuds.
Keyboardist Richard Wright died in 2008 and original frontman Syd Barrett, who left the band much earlier due to his declining mental health, passed away in 2006.
Asked if he would be open to a reunion, Mason told Reuters: “Oh yeah. I would. But I don’t think you’ll find very much support from Roger and David for working together.”
Mason said hadn’t discussed the possibility with either Waters, 80, or Gilmour, 78.
Waters left the band in 1985 following personal and creative differences and was embroiled in a legal battle over the use of the Pink Floyd name. His spat with Gilmour has only worsened since and the pair clashed last year on social media and even over the Russia-Ukraine war.
