City of Eureka seeks memories, photos of Sequoia Park, zoo
Eureka is seeking photos and memories about Sequoia Park, the zoo and the playground.
“Do you have fond memories and photos of the 125- year- old history of these beloved spaces that you would be willing to share?” the city asked in a news release.
Following a series of community outreach efforts to create a new conceptual design for the park, the community expressed prioritizing “a design which will enhance what is loved, restore what is broken, and provide what is missing.”
The photos and memories will be used for a special publication that will be used to solicit contributions and engage volunteers in implementing the new design.
The submissions could also be used in online promotions.
A report from Greenway Partners on the Sequoia Park facilities found the spot held importance for local residents.
“The Upper Meadow of Sequoia Park evokes strong memories for many in our community. This is where they first visited the redwood forest, came for local playground activities, school trips and visits to the duck pond,” a portion of the report states. “… There have been numerous play structures and amenities in Sequoia Park over the years. As the community has grown, the Park has not kept pace and while still widely used, is impacted by poor drainage, older play structures, older restroom facilities and limited access for citizens with disabilities.”
Whle nearly any photo from the park’s 125-year history would be helpful, the most need are from the 1930s to the 1990s. Both color or black and white photos — that are not blurry — are welcomed by the city. Also helpful would be a description of the photo, the approximate date and any reference to landmarks or individuals shown.
The city is also looking for written recollections about Sequoia Park, the playground and the zoo that can be submitted without a photo.
Photos physically mailed cannot be returned so the city suggests sending a copy. The city is also willing to help with copying or scanning documents.
People who submit photos and memories will be given credit for submissions. The special publication will also be given to those whose submissions are accepted. There is no monetary compensation.
Submissions can be sent by email to sequoiaparkmemories@ci.eureka.ca.gov or uploaded to www. sequoiaparkmemories.com or mailed to Sequoia Park Memories, c/o Adorni Community Center, 1011 Waterfront Drive, Eureka, CA 95501.
