City of Willits hiring for numerous positions

Accounting, engineerin­g, police and more

The City of Willits currently has almost a dozen job openings and is looking to fill positions immediatel­y.

During the Jan. 22 City Council meeting, Council members and City staff discussed goal setting plans for the next two years, but admitted that some of goals may be limited due to a lack of qualified staff. Currently the City of Willits is in need of an assistant engineer, two accountant­s, police officers, police dispatcher­s and a new police chief.

According to the its website, the City of Willits is looking for employees that believe in these core values: Diversity, Innovation, Integrity, Teamwork, Respect, Responsive Customer Service, and Trust.

“We are at a critical staffing level at the police department,” said Willits Police Department (WPD) Chief Scott Warnock. “I gave a 90- day notice that I was retiring… I’ve got 40 years in the retirement system… and HR (human resources) and the city manager have been trying diligently get applicants for the police chief’s position and have not had one applicant.”

City manager Stephanie Garrabrant- Sierra shared that she had talked just recently with a potential interim chief of police and was hopeful. Warnock said the city is seeking assistance from nearby cities to cover shifts until more police officers can be hired.

Another need at the police station is for dispatcher­s and file clerks. The WPD will hold entry-level public safety dispatch and records clerk applicant testing beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Willits City Hall.

Requiremen­ts include a high school diploma, at least one year experience working with the public, a valid California driver’s license, knowledge of wordproces­sing, typing 40 words per minute, and ability to work a rotating shift including weekends and holidays. The full time accountant position at the City of Willits does not require a Certified Public Accountant degree. Instead candidates need only “any combinatio­n of education and experience which would provide opportunit­y to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed.

Normally, either possession of a college degree in accounting, finance or business administra­tion with at least 12 semester or 16 quarter units of Accounting, including Principles of Accounting, Intermedia­te Accounting, Advanced Accounting, Government­al Accounting, Cost Accounting or Auditing; or one year of experience in the accounting field.”
