Mullin: Jordan trashed Warriors in return to league

After a year playing minor league baseball, the superstar returned to NBA — 25 years ago

- By Gary Peterson

Twenty- five years ago, Michael Jordan returned to the NBA.

A more unique and overwrought spectacle we’ve never experienced.

Seriously — a three-time NBA champion with the Bulls, a seven- time scoring leader, a nine-time AllStar, returning from … minor league baseball.

There were layers upon layers of intrigue during the run- up to his comeback.

He left the Chicago White Sox minor league camp on March 2, 1995. His return to the basketball court came on March 19. Assuming Chris Mullin isn’t yanking our chain, Jordan met up with some Warriors players, presumably between those dates and in an undisclosed location. And then:

“I think we had Tim Hardaway and Latrell Sprewell at that point in time,” said Mullin, a teammate of Jordan’s on the 1992 Olympics Dream Team. “They might have been popping off a little bit. Michael said, ‘ Mully, let’s go — get me your gear.’

“He went to my locker — put my gear on — and went out there and basically single-handedly beat the Warriors down by himself. And that’s when I was like, ‘ This guy is coming back.’”

To that point in his NBA career, Jordan had averaged 30.8 points in 17 games against the Warriors. That’s actually a tick better than the NBA at large fared — 32.3 ppg.

To celebrate the anniversary of Jordan’s comeback, NBC Sports Chicago has produced a 30-minute documentary. You can find the trailer at https://www. nbcsports. com/chicago/ bulls/michael- jordan- imback- documentary. Just be aware, you’re going to be left wanting more.
