When the Ukiah Skate Park opened Thursday for the first time in two months, Angela and Joaquin happily took their three young boys inside.

“We live a block away, so we would usually spend half the day here,” said Angela of Low Gap Park, explaining that after enjoying the skate park, the family would use the exercise course, then “skip rocks in the creek.”

Since none of those activities have been allowed since midMarch, what was the mom of three boys (aged 6, 9, and 11) doing to keep them occupied for the past several weeks?

“Well, the backyard was OK for a while,” she said with a laugh.

When asked if they were happy the skate park was open again the boys all nodded, but the youngest lamented that it was only open Thursdays and Fridays.

“So we’ll have to come back tomorrow,” he said, looking up at his mom with a smile. “Can we,

Mom?” “Yes,” she said.

On Thursday, the family couldn’t continue onto the trails, but by Friday morning the rest of Low Gap Park had reopened to foot traffic again. The restrooms, tennis courts and playground at the entrance were still closed, but the parking lot was open.

Inside, people were hiking and using the disc golf course, but the dog parks were still locked.

City officials said that the skate park will be open Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. A city employee will be onhand to make sure no more than about a dozen people are inside at one time, and that users are maintaining the proper distance.
