Wildfire burning off Hwy. 253
Blaze reaches 185 acres, 20% contained
On Sunday, Cal Fire and the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority were dispatched to a vegetation fire burning on the north side of Highway 253, in the 9000 block, later named the Turnout Fire.
Ukiah Valley Fire Authority firefighters were on scene with one engine, a brush truck and a water tender. UVFA was released at 8 p.m. Sunday. Cal Fire has taken over command of the fire with additional Cal Fire resources.
As of 9 p.m. Sunday, the fire had grown to 50 acres, with no containment. As of 10 a.m. Monday, the Cal Fire Mendocino Unit was reporting that the Turnout Fire burning southwest of Ukiah had grown to 100 acres and was 15 percent contained.
By noon Monday, Cal Fire was reporting the Turnout Fire had
grown to 185 acres, and was 20 percent contained.
“The fire continues to burn in oak woodland and brush,” Cal Fire stated in an update on the fire. “Firefighters are challenged by steep, rugged terrain with difficult access. Personnel will remain at scene throughout the day working to strengthen containment.”
Resources committed to the fire included: one helicopter, five engines, one dozer, and one water tender. Personnel involved numbered 72, with four crews.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
