Well established North Coast plein air painter Lynne Whiting Roberston is featured this July at the Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino where she has been a member for over a decade. “Oil and Water” aptly describes her choice of media, watercolor and oils. Many of her paintings are based on locations around the Mendocino coast and California valleys, though she also travels to Sedona, Yosemite, and Zion for inspiration. Big River is an all-time favorite, seen in many seasons, like visiting a familiar friend.

Kelley House Museum’s summer exhibit
The Kelley House’s summer exhibit, “Quilted Iconic Buildings of Mendocino” runs through Aug. 31. The museum is open Fridaysunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Twentyfive different historical buildings are colorfully rendered on 18” x 18” quilt squares, individually pieced and stitched by members of the Ocean Wave Quilters. In an extraordinary display of history meets art, iconic buildings are brought to life, including the Temple of Kwan Tai, the Presbyterian Church, the Maccallum House, the Kelley House Water Tower, and many others. Each handmade quilt square is accompanied by a black and white photo and history of the building. In July of 2019, one of the Ocean Wave Quilters members, Cindi Jo Willey, issued a challenge to guild members to make 18” x 18” quilts of Mendocino’s iconic buildings, to be completed by July of 2020. Nine of our members accepted the challenge. The pandemic delayed the original deadline, but they are excited to reveal the results at the Kelley House Museum.
The Ocean Wave Quilters is a 70-plus member guild that meets monthly and contributes to the community in a myriad of ways, including quilts for newborns, dresses for Hope for Women International, touch quilts for patients, and masks during the pandemic. Special thanks to Ocean Wave Quilter Sharon Lau for coordinating this exhibit. For more information, visit kelleyhousemuseum.org. 2nd Annual Art Under Twenty Exhibition: Virtual Show Willits High School’s Visual Arts Department is pleased to present the 22nd annual Art Under Twenty Exhibition. WCA participating in North Coast Otters Public Initiative
Willits Center for the Arts is participating in the North Coast Otters Public Arts Initiative live and in person June to September 2021. North Coast Otters is a community ‘treasure hunt’ or ‘festival tour’ to find sculptures painted by local artists, with an aim to celebrate life, water, and otters; support local businesses; and raise funds for student projects. WCA’S Otter is painted by Kathy Croomer and Lynne Whiting. Seek sightings and selfies with 108 otter sculptures on display at participating shops, restaurants, galleries, and visitor centers that have reopened with COVID-SAFE guidelines. In addition, the project encourages community members to participate in the ongoing ‘citizen science’ river otter records study by consistently reporting when and where wild river otters are observed throughout the North Coast region.
For further information on the treasure hunt see: https://otterart.humboldt.edu/treasurehunt. The gallery is located at 71 E. Commercial St. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday to Sunday.
