Curry’s rise to be turned into documentary
A24, ‘Black Panther’ director Ryan Coogler will produce
Stephen Curry’s journey from being a skinny shooting guard at a small private college in North Carolina to NBA superstardom and worldwide fame is set to be turned into a documentary.
“Underrated,” a movie about Curry’s rise to prominence, will be directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Pete Nicks and produced by New York-based company A24 and Ryan Coogler, who directed the blockbuster “Black Panther.” Nicks and Coogler will also produce for Proximity Media.
The Curry film will mark the first foray into documentaries for A24, which will finance the project. A24 is an independent entertainment company that specializes in film and television production.
Curry was a formerly unheralded player at Davidson College before he led the basketball team to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight in 2008. Drafted seventh overall by the Warriors in 2009, Curry went on to win two MVP trophies and lead Golden State to three NBA championships in a largely magical 12-year run as a professional.
Curry and the Warriors recently agreed to a fouryear, $215 million contract extension that begins in 2022 and runs through the 2025-26 season.
Curry and business partner Erick Peyton will also be producers for the documentary via their entertainment company Unanimous Media, which also was behind the film “Breakthrough” and TV golf game show “Holey Moley.” The company was named after the unanimous vote Curry received for his second NBA MVP trophy in 2016.
The “Underrated” title came from Curry’s Underrated Tour in which high school athletes with threestar ratings are given training regimens to help them become more attractive to college programs. Curry, the son of former NBA player Dell Curry, was considered a three-star athlete at Charlotte Christian High School.
Nicks is an alumnus of UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and was a producer for documentaries, “The Waiting Room,” “The Force” and “Homeroom,” which were all set in Oakland.
