Committee's work is important
To the Editor:
The Social Equity Committee gives Tuolumne County the opportunity to be on the cutting edge of social justice work for rural communities. We can work to ensure true social justice for all. Our politicians have the opportunity to be leaders in the fight to ensure social justice for all, and I hope they embrace this challenge and allow this committee to continue with Colette Such as the courageous leader.
The personal attack that occurred against Colette at the last council meeting was unacceptable. Darren Duez's efforts to discredit Colette is a very clear example of a person being uncomfortable with the work this committee is doing. Talking about systemic racism and implicit bias is uncomfortable. One reason this is uncomfortable is because people often confuse bigotry and systemic racism. Yes, both exist in Tuolumne County. We have bigoted people, and we have systemic racism. They are two different issues. This committee of course would like to educate bigoted people to help them move away from these beliefs, but more importantly this committee needs to continue to take the steps necessary to dismantle systemic racism.
Many want to deny systemic racism exists because they don't see actions of bigotry. Tuolumne County is not a bubble immune from these issues. Our uncomfortableness with this committee is proof it needs to continue. Just know, we will get to a place where we understand what systemic racism is and we will be able to build a community that truly offers social justice to all. Karen Wood
