Donald A. Deiss Jan. 28, 1925 — Jan. 21, 2021

Donald Albert Deiss was born in Salinas, California, on January 28, 1925. Don served in the US Navy during World War II as a radioman on the USS Archerfish. Upon returning from the war, he met and married his beloved wife of 72 years, Vesta. Don worked as a machine shop foreman for Spreckels Sugar in Spreckels, California, and was dedicated to serving his community, volunteering as a fireman in Salinas for 25 years. Don and Vesta moved to Sonora in 1988.

Don was a devoted family man whose tough exterior belied his tender heart. He would do anything for his loved ones and cared deeply for them. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hiking and camping. At home, he cultivated an expansive garden of vegetables and kept roses for his wife. In his retirement he often cheered on the San Francisco 49ers and Giants and spent time in his garage on woodworking projects. He put his carpentry skills to frequent use, building his wife a summer porch in the garden.

Don is survived by his daughters, Donna Deiss, of Dunsmuir, and Kathy Reins, of Sonora; and his granddaughter, Kalissa Reins, of Sonora. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vesta, and his sister, June Zupan.
