Richard Joseph ‘Coach’ Dick Mannini

Richard “Dick” Mannini passed away peacefully at his home in Concord.

He was born and raised in San Francisco by his Italian immigrant parents, Joseph and Dina Mannini. He joined the Marines out of high school and served in the Korean War, earning several medals of honor including a Purple Heart.

Upon return, Dick attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he played football. In 2010 he was inducted into its Hall of Fame. He met the love of his life while at Cal Poly, Sandra White, and they were married in 1958.

After graduating in 1959 Dick began his longtime coaching career that would lead him from Chowchilla High School to Hancock College to Santa Maria High School to Rio Hondo Jr. College, then up to San Jose State, St. Mary’s College, Stanford and then San Francisco State before retiring to move to Twain Harte. In 2008 he was inducted into the St. Mary’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

“Coach” loved camping, fishing, spending time with family and watching sports.

He was a mentor to many young men on and off the field. He positively impacted the lives of many young men, many of whom have stayed in touch with him throughout the years, even in his final days.

Dick is predecease­d by his loving wife Sandra in 2016 and his brother Robert. Dick is survived by his three daughters, Denise (Steve) Walker, Janice (Pat) Ertola, Lisa (Brad) Schultz; and grandchild­ren Megan (Kirk), Kevin (Brianna), Greg, Anthony, Kelsey, Nicholas, Kyle and Nicole; and great-grandchild­ren Nathan, Emily and Stella.
