Season's greetings to the thief of saints

-

To the Editor:

My humble home is located in a mobile home park for seniors. Nothing made me suspect it might not be a safe and secure place. The only invading, insistent creatures in this park have been an abundance of squirrels and the deer population — particularly one stately, beautiful buck with an imposing set of antlers and a habit of peeking in first one window and then another. This was a regular occurrence until he learned there was nothing to be gained. The previous occupant must have fed him, and he now expected me to do the same, but I chose to abide by the law that forbids feeding wildlife. I have refrained from this practice, except on one occasion when I couldn't resist tossing him an apple.

Speaking of abiding by the law, I am wondering about the thief who recently came in the night and absconded with my statue of Francis of Assisi. Can he even enjoy it without guilt or remorse lurking close behind? Perhaps, since this is the Christmas season, he stole it to give as a gift? Or perhaps he needs money so desperately he will sell it to some stranger for a price not worthy of such a treasure? Given the opportunity, I would buy it back. If by chance the thief is reading this, won't you please return it? I have cherished its gentle presence for years.

My St. Francis is approximately 3 feet tall, and concrete. Only a strong, determined scoundrel could have got it down six steep steps and carried it off. It may be forever lost to me, but I wish the thief a prosperous New Year, so maybe he can leave behind his hurtful thieving.
