49ers’ expectations: Samuel will be back, but Garoppolo won’t
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel should return to the San Francisco 49ers in mid-june and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will likely be traded once he fully recovers from shoulder surgery.
That’s according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, who spoke with reporters Tuesday for the first time since last month’s draft and provided notable updates on two prominent players who are not participating in the team’s offseason program.
Shanahan said he expects Samuel to report for the threeday mandatory minicamp, which begins June 14. That suggests the relationship between the first-team All-pro and the organization has improved since Samuel requested a trade last month amid stalled contractextension talks.
Shanahan was asked if he thought he relationship with Samuel could be restored.
“Yeah, of course I do,” Shanahan said. “I felt that the last time I talked to you guys at draft time. And I feel the same, if not stronger.”
Shanahan declined to delve into the impetus for Samuel’s trade request.
“Those are conservations we’ve had with Deebo,” Shanahan said. “And maybe some more on that will come out eventually.”
Meanwhile, Shanahan, who suggested earlier this offseason the 49ers could keep Garoppolo for another season, said the intent was to deal him once he resumes throwing. Garoppolo had shoulder surgery in early March and could begin throwing around early July.
“I expect that at some time, most likely, he’ll be traded, but who knows?” Shanahan said. “That’s not exactly a guarantee yet. It’s been on hold (since his surgery). When he’s healthy, we’ll see what happens.”
Mack update: Tight end George Kittle has been trying to recruit Pro Bowl center Alex
Mack to return for a 14th season rather than retire. Kittle, who attended Mack's wedding in Ireland in March, joked that he has tried to enlist Mack's wife in his quest.
“If he wants to retire, he deserves to retire,” Kittle said. “He's had a hell of a career.”
Mack has not been present for the first two OTA practices and his possible arrival doesn't appear imminent; Shanahan said Tuesday that Mack was traveling in another country.
Injury report: Linebacker Azeez Al-shaair had offseason shoulder and knee surgery and is expected to be ready to participate in training camp, Shanahan said. In addition, offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill and linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-fowles did not practice Tuesday — both are dealing with knee tendinitis. Shanahan said right tackle Mike Mcglinchey (quadriceps) and defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee) should be ready for training camp after they had surgeries during the 2021 season.
