Don’t have your inflation relief check yet? Here’s why

- By JAQUELINE PINEDO The Sacramento Bee

If you’re still waiting on your California inflation relief check, there are a few reasons you might not have the cash yet.

To know when to expect your money, you’ll want to double check exactly how you received your Golden State Stimulus, if you got one. The California Franchise Tax Board told The Bee some qualifying taxpayers have either forgotten how they received their stimulus or changed their banking information, which will confuse their timeline.

Direct deposit disbursements are still being rolled out and will be completed mid-november; debit cards will then be mailed out to all other qualifying taxpayers.

Inflation relief checks are being processed as expected with no delays, tax board spokesman Andrew Lepage said in an email to The Bee.

Here are the qualifications for the payment, in general, and the factors for getting a direct deposit or mailed debit card — and when:

Middle Class Tax Refund QUALIFICATIONS

According the the tax board:

•Filed your 2020 tax return by Oct. 15, 2021

•Meet the California adjusted gross income requirements

•Were a California resident for six months or more of the 2020 tax year

•Are a California resident on the date the payment is issued

CALIFORNIA INFLATION RELIEF DIRECT DEPOSITS

The first round of direct deposits was completed on Oct. 25.

The second round of direct deposits began Oct. 28. Qualifying taxpayers can expect to see their deposits in their accounts by Nov. 22, Lepage said.

Here are some key requirements to receive a direct deposit according to the board’s Middle Class Tax Refund website:

•Electronically filed 2020 tax returns

•Received a Golden State Stimulus as a direct deposit

•California inflation relief debit cards

Those who don’t receive a direct deposit, and qualify for a Middle Class Tax refund, will receive their payment in a debit card.

Debit card payments started rolling out on Oct. 24 for taxpayers who received both Golden State Stimulus one and two. For taxpayers who changed their banking information since filing their 2020 tax returns, debit cards will be mailed out starting Dec.

17. The state expects all debit cards will be mailed by Jan. 14.

According to the tax board, here are some key points as to why you’ll receive a debit card instead of a direct deposit:

WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A DIRECT DEPOSIT SOONER

If you qualify for a direct deposit per the guidelines above and don’t receive it by Nov. 22, there are two options Lepage recommends:

•Consult your 2020 CA Tax Return to re-verify eligibility.

•Contact the the Middle Class Tax Refund customer support line at 800-5429332
