What’s next
To the Editor:
The election’s over. Americans rejected violence and rejected Trump-selected election deniers. Americans want legal abortion, safety, low inflation, and an immigration system that works.
Americans rejected violence, including fires and looting after George Floyd, the Jan 6 insurrection, and the attack on Paul Pelosi. Violence by Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and other self-anointed militias was rejected. They’re just street gangs, armed and dangerous.
We must support our police. They have tough jobs. Misuse of lethal force makes great headlines, but it’s the exception. Across the country, police are begging us. Please, get AR-15S off the streets and limit access to handguns. In schools, our kids must be safe, not threatened by angry young men with AR-15S.
Our immigration system is broken. Asylum was intended for political refugees, not refugees from countries where droughts, inept governments, and criminal gangs make life dangerous. We must clarify and actively communicate our asylum requirements to asylum seekers, before they travel here.
We cannot deport 10 million undocumented immigrants. Let them earn citizenship through military or public service. Future illegal immigrants must face stiff penalties. Legal immigration must balance with job creation. Currently, we create about 3 million jobs a year and welcome about 1 million immigrants, who take about 10% of those jobs.
COVID shut down the world economy, created shortages, and caused inflation. To avoid a Great Depression, Congress passed Covid-relief bills ($4 trillion under Trump and $2 trillion under Biden), and the Federal Reserve flooded the economy with another $4 trillion. Corporations used strong demand and product shortages to boost prices and profits.
Within a year, higher interest rates will bring inflation down. Meanwhile, Biden has built the foundation for a strong, non-inflationary economy by breaking the pricing monopoly of drug companies, and investing in infrastructure, renewable energy and U.S. manufacturing.
