The Summerville High School boys junior varsity soccer team traveled to Weston Ranch High School in Stockton last weekend to compete in the 2022 Cougar Cup. It was a six-team roundrobin tournament scored by points for wins, ties and losses.

Summerville started the tourney with San Francisco International 1, a team composed of all ninth graders, and the first of two teams that the school brought with them. It was a hard-fought match, but Summerville came out on top with a 3-1 win.

The second was against the San Francisco International 2 composed of all 10th graders. It was a very physical and backand-forth match that ended in a 1-1 tie.

In the third and final game of the first day, Summerville faced Mountain House. The boys were worn down, but showed great strength and grit throughout the match as Mountain House scored first. Finding themselves down for the first time in the tourney, Summerville needed to fight hard to come from behind.

With two minutes left in the first half, Summerville found the back of the net and tied the match going into the half. The second half was dominated by Summerville, which scored two more times to win it 3-1.

After the first day of play,

Summerville sat in second place in points tied with San Francisco International 2 and trailed the host team Weston Ranch.

The first match of the day on Saturday was a showdown with the point leader Weston Ranch. Summerville started off at a fast pace, running their defense from side to side, and setting up the first strike with a goal early in

the match.

Five minutes later Summerville found the net again against a team that had only been scored on two times in their last three matches. Weston Ranch bounced right back and returned the favor by blasting in an upper right corner shot from outside the box to end the first half.

The second half was all Summerville as it put two more in and finished the match with an impressive 4-1 victory.

Going into the last game of the tournament, Summerville was sitting on top of the leaderboard by 1 point. Three teams had a shot at the title and the outcome of each match would determine their fate.

Summerville’s last game was against Edison High, known for their physicality. In spite of their fatigue following a long weekend of play, the game started off as a battle as both knew what was at stake. At the end of the first half, the score was still 0-0.

Summerville came out physical and on a mission in the second half and managed to score on a hard-fought cross that was buried into the back of the net. With 10 minutes left in the game, Edison hit an equalizer with a shot from the outside.

In a dramatic run with three minutes left in the game, Summerville’s Jake Boyd got a breakaway and was about to put one in when he was taken down in the box. The other player was ejected, and Summerville was awarded the penalty shot.

With poise, Boyd buried the shot. Summerville defended well over the final three minutes to hold onto the 2-1 victory.

At the end, Summerville posted a 4-0-1 record in the tournament. Individual awards went to Gage Miller with the “Golden Boot” for his impressive six goals in the tournament, and Summerville’s goalie Toby Tandy missed the most saves by two to the goalie of San Francisco International.
