Bulldogs top Sun Devils, break mark for victories



Ronnie Rivers rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns, Anthoula “Tank” Kelly had a 70yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown, and No. 21 Fresno State beat Arizona State, 31-20, in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday.

Marcus McMaryion rushed for a touchdown and was 15 for 29 passing for 176 yards to help the Bulldogs (12-2) set a school record for wins in a season. He also threw two intercepti­ons.

Eno Benjamin rushed for 118 yards and one touchdown for the Sun Devils (7-6) in their third straight bowl loss.

Manny Wilkins threw for 129 yards, with a three-yard scoring pass to Kyle Williams and two intercepti­ons.

Rivers put Fresno State back in front 24-20 with a 68-yard touchdown run up the middle in the third quarter and had a five-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to seal Fresno State’s second win over a Pac-12 opponent this season.

Wilkins suffered an apparent knee injury on the final pass of his college career, which was intercepte­d by Juju Hughes.

NORTH CAROLINA A&T 24, ALCORN STATE 22: Lamar Raynard passed for 292 yards and two touchdowns and Malik Wilson returned a kickoff for the game-sealing touchdown Saturday as the Aggies (10-2) held off the Braves (9-4) to win the Celebratio­n Bowl in Atlanta.

It was the second straight HBCU national championsh­ip for North Carolina A&T and its third in four years.

TULANE 41, LOUISIANA LAFAYETTE 24: Darius Bradwell rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Green Wave to its first postseason victory in 16 years, a win over the intrastate rival Ragin’ Cajuns (7-7) in the Cure Bowl in Orlando.

Tulane (7-6) won four of five down the stretch in the regular season not only to qualify for its first bowl berth in five years but also to finish with a winning record (5-3) in conference play for the first time since 2014.

UTAH STATE 52, NORTH TEXAS 13: Jordan Love threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns and Jalen Greene had six catches for 151 yards and a score to help the Aggies rout the Mean Green in the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerqu­e.

Interim coach Frank Maile directed Utah State (11-2) after Matt Wells left to take the Texas Tech job.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN 23, EASTERN MICHIGAN 21: Tyler Bass kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give Georgia Southern (10-3) a victory over Eastern Michigan (7-6) in the Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Ala.

Eastern Wash. advances

Eric Barriere threw seven touchdown passes as Eastern Washington beat Maine, 50-19, in Cheney, Wash., in the semifinals of the Football Championsh­ip Subdivisio­n playoffs to advance to the national title game against powerhouse North Dakota State.

Nsimba Webster caught four touchdown passes for Eastern Washington (12-2), which was playing in the national semifinals for the fifth time in nine years. The Black Bears finished 10-4.

Barriere completed 21 of 30 passes for 352 yards and tied the school record for touchdown passes in a game.

Valdosta State wins again

Ninety-six points were scored in the NCAA Division II championsh­ip game. Two points that weren’t scored made the difference.

Rogan Wells tied the championsh­ip record with five touchdown passes, and Valdosta State (14-0) won its fourth national title with a 49-47 victory over Ferris State (15-1) in McKinney, Tex.

Ferris State’s rally from an 11point deficit fell short when Jevon Shaw’s two-point conversion pass sailed wide of Keyondre Craig in the back of the end zone with 40 seconds left.
