Dumfries Man Dies In I-95 Truck Crash

- — Tom Jackman

A Dumfries man was killed Tuesday when he apparently lost control of his pickup truck and crashed on an Interstate 95 exit ramp in southern Fairfax County, Virginia State Police said yesterday.

Police said Maurice A. Watkins, 63, was driving a 1998 GMC Sonoma south on I-95. About 3:40 p.m., police said, Watkins apparently lost control while taking the exit for Route 1 and slammed the truck into a guardrail and then the embankment on the right shoulder.

Watkins was taken to Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, where he died, police said. No other vehicles were involved, and Watkins had no passengers. Sgt. Terry Licklider said investigators are trying to determine whether Watkins suffered some sort of medical trauma before the crash and are awaiting the medical examiner’s report.
