Computer Breakdown Closes Service Centers
Customer service centers of the Department of Motor Vehicles closed early yesterday after two mainframe computers that handle electronic payments crashed.
Marcella Williamson, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Information Technology Agency, said one computer failed about midnight Tuesday and another early yesterday. Operations at the transportation, taxation and social services agencies also were affected.
Williamson said the problems should be fixed by today. People who missed a deadline for payment can make it today without penalty, said Kevin Hall, a spokesman for Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D). The governor also has urged police agencies to show discretion if they come across a motorist who has a recently expired vehicle registration or driver’s license.
