Democratic Candidate Drops Out of Race
The Democratic candidate who was certified last week to seek the seat of a defeated Republican state senator from Newport News withdrew this week, leaving party officials to find another candidate.
Steven T. Corneliussen had qualified as a “place-holder” candidate just hours before Sen. Martin E. Williams was defeated in a GOP nominating contest June 12. Corneliussen stepped aside Tuesday, said Danae Jones, a spokeswoman for the state Democratic Party.
Party officials in the 1st District will meet today and are expected to schedule an expedited “firehouse primary” to choose a new nominee.
Democrats see the loss of Williams to anti-tax activist Tricia B. Stall as an opportunity to gain one of the four GOP seats they need to win this fall to gain a Senate majority for the first time in 12 years.
