Journalist, Driver Killed in Blast
A cameraman and a driver for an Iraqi television station were killed Tuesday evening in a roadside bombing north of Baghdad. The journalists from al-Furat, a satellite channel affiliated with a leading Shiite political party, were on their way from Baghdad to Samarra to report on the second anniversary of the bombing of a Shiite shrine that inflamed sectarian violence across Iraq.
The bombing occurred on the outskirts of Balad, where the team had planned to spend the night, colleagues said.
Killed were cameraman Alaa Abdul Kareem al-Fartousi and the driver, Alaa Assi. Correspondent Fatima al-Hassani was severely wounded, said Ahmed Shaqir, deputy news director at al-Furat, which is affiliated with the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq.
