Jour­nal­ist, Driver Killed in Blast

A cam­era­man and a driver for an Iraqi television sta­tion were killed Tues­day evening in a road­side bomb­ing north of Bagh­dad. The jour­nal­ists from al-Fu­rat, a satel­lite chan­nel af­fil­i­ated with a lead­ing Shi­ite po­lit­i­cal party, were on their way from Bagh­dad to Sa­marra to re­port on the sec­ond an­niver­sary of the bomb­ing of a Shi­ite shrine that in­flamed sec­tar­ian vi­o­lence across Iraq.

The bomb­ing oc­curred on the out­skirts of Balad, where the team had planned to spend the night, col­leagues said.

Killed were cam­era­man Alaa Ab­dul Ka­reem al-Far­tousi and the driver, Alaa Assi. Correspond­ent Fa­tima al-Has­sani was se­verely wounded, said Ahmed Shaqir, deputy news di­rec­tor at al-Fu­rat, which is af­fil­i­ated with the Is­lamic Supreme Coun­cil of Iraq.
