Virginia doesn’t need this plan

Regarding the May 22 Metro article “Justices to weigh uranium mine ban”:

Virginia is under assault. We find our land being ripped apart by the construction of two natural gas pipelines: the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Outside experts, such as Synapse Energy Economics, have said neither is necessary. President Trump wants to drill for oil off our coast. Now the quest to start uranium mining has come to the forefront.

Last year, four nuclear reactors were under construction in the United States. The two in South Carolina have been canceled because of Westinghouse’s bankruptcy. The two in Georgia have experienced multibillion-dollar cost overruns and are years behind schedule. Only one nuclear reactor has been finished in the United States in the past 20 years.

Uranium mining is linked to an increased risk of lung cancer. Tailings leaking into water sources can pollute drinking supplies.

Let’s have a permanent ban on this deadly plan in the commonwealth. Earle Mitchell, Springfield
