The new Brig. Gen. Jack Ripper

Richard Cohen compared national security adviser John Bolton to Dr. Strangelove in his May 22 op-ed, “The new Dr. Strangelove.” A more apt comparison would be to Brig. Gen. Jack Ripper, who sent his bombers to attack Russia in Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 film “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love the Bomb.” Dr. Strangelove is an academic who explains the workings of the Doomsday Machine, the fictional Soviet Union’s unrevealed attempt to defend itself on the cheap. The device automatically destroys the world if it detects a nuclear attack and cannot be defused.
