An older friend

who grew up in Eastern Europe and experienced life under homegrown authoritarianism, German occupation and Communist rule has long predicted that President Trump’s next target would be the FBI. My friend believes this is the path to autocratic rule here in the United States, and he may be right if our system of checks and balances fails.

We are raised with belief in our democratic system, but the reality is that it is vulnerable to demagoguery and abuse, even by elected officials. It is increasingly obvious that the craven failure of the Republican majorities in Congress to stand up to Mr. Trump may be the biggest danger of all to our form of government, and for which they will be held responsible and not be forgiven.
