Eastern High student is arrested at school
An 18-year-old student was arrested at Eastern Senior High School in Kingman Park on Tuesday afternoon after school security found a handgun in his bag, D.C. police said.
Police accused the teen of carrying a pistol without a license and possession of unregistered ammunition.
Police said they got a call at about 12:15 p.m. for a report of a person with a weapon at Eastern Senior High School in the 1700 block of East Capitol Street NE.
Upon arrival, they said school security told officers that they noticed a handgun inside a male student’s bag as he was going through the X-ray scanner.
School security confiscated the weapon and detained the student, and then called police.
In an email to Eastern Senior High School parents on Tuesday, Principal Sah Brown said the school’s staff immediately notified police about a weapon being on school property. D.C. police arrived and removed the weapon, Brown wrote. The incident was referred to D.C. police for further investigation.
“I want to be clear that no students were harmed or directly impacted by this incident, and the weapon never made past security into our building,” Brown wrote. “The school environment remained stable, and the remainder of the day continued as usual, including all instruction and standard dismissal procedures.”
