10-year-old missing swimmer’s body found


Searchers found the body of a 10-year-old girl who disappeare­d while swimming in Southern Maryland over the weekend, authoritie­s announced Monday.

Genesi Elizabeth Sosa-bonilla was found dead near where she was last seen in the water on Sunday, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff ’s Office said in a news release.

The sheriff ’s office, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and members of volunteer fire and rescue companies responded to Camp Merryeland­e in Piney Point about 1 p.m. Sunday for a report of swimmers in distress, the sheriff ’s office said.

Two 10-year-olds and a man were swimming when the current pulled them farther out into the Potomac River. The man was able to swim to shore and people nearby were able to rescue one of the two children from the water, the sheriff ’s office said.

The U.S. Coast Guard and agencies from Maryland and Virginia were involved in the search, which continued overnight into Monday.
