Guardians: Cleveland lost two starting pitchers to injury.

Zach Plesac (broken hand) and Aaron Civale (forearm inflammati­on) were placed on the 15day injured list before the Guardians opened a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners.

Plesac was supposed to start Friday’s opener, but the right-hander was scratched about four hours before the scheduled first pitch.

Giants: 1B Brandon Belt will undergo seasonendi­ng arthroscop­ic surgery on his right knee Saturday in San Francisco.

Belt had surgery on the same knee in 2015 and 2018. The 34-year-old has faced multiple stints on the injured list with knee inflammati­on this season, missing 23 games between May 19 and June 14.

Tigers: OF Austin Meadows revealed he has been dealing with mental health issues along with physical ailments and will not play again this season.

Twins: RHP Sonny Gray exited Friday’s game against the White Sox in the fourth inning because of right hamstring tightness.

Yankees: 1B Anthony Rizzo will miss a pivotal three-game series against Tampa Bay this weekend after getting an epidural shot for lingering lower back pain. Rizzo will rehab Saturday and Sunday in New York and possibly resume baseball activities Monday.

Rizzo has hit 30 home runs this season. He’s batting .225 with 71 RBI.


Cal Raleigh, Mariners The catcher hit two homers and drove in four runs as Seattle stayed hot.

Reigning American League Cy Young winner Robbie Ray (11-8, 3.58 ERA) and Seattle take on rookie Xzavion Curry (0-0, 5.40) and Cleveland in a matchup of teams trying to hold on to playoff position.
