Linebacker (5)

Cole Holcomb, Jamin Davis, Jon Bostic, David Mayo, Milo Eifler

It was a surprise that the Commanders kept five. It was perhaps a bigger surprise that they brought back Bostic, a 31-year-old who spent three seasons with Washington but suffered a pectoral muscle injury in 2021 and left as a free agent. (He signed with New Orleans but then got cut, allowing Washington to add him via waivers.) Bostic has experience in the system and is known for his leadership. His mentorship could help the development of Davis, who will shift to the outside instead of trying his hand at middle linebacker again. Holcomb, essentially the quarterback of the defense, is the leader of the group, and Eifler earned his spot after beating out Khaleke Hudson, among others, during camp. But Washington’s use of its linebackers bears watching: The Commanders are expected to incorporate more five-man fronts and have more fluidity with their matchup zone coverage on the back end.
