Pilots beat Bulldogs to claim WCC title

Maisie Burnham scored 19 points and Alex Fowler had 15 points and 11 rebounds as secondseed­ed Portland upset top-seeded and two-time defending West Coast Conference tournament champion Gonzaga, 64-60, on Tuesday in Las Vegas to claim the title and NCAA tournament berth.

Portland (23-8) snapped a sixgame losing streak against the No. 16 Bulldogs — with its last win coming in the tournament semifinals during the 2019-20 season. The Pilots won the tournament championsh­ip that year before the season was canceled because of the pandemic.

Yvonne Ejim had 21 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out for Gonzaga (28-4). Kayleigh Truong, the WCC player of the year, had 18 points, five assists and three steals — but also seven turnovers.

• UNLV 71, SAN DIEGO STATE 68: Essence Booker scored 22 points, and the No. 21 Rebels (30-2) held off the Aztecs (23-10) in the semifinals of the Mountain West tournament in Las Vegas.

• SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 93, OMAHA 51: Haleigh Timmer scored 13 of her 18 points in the first half, and the top-seeded Jackrabbit­s (28-5) routed the sixthseede­d Mavericks (15-17) in Sioux Falls, S.D., to earn the Summit League tournament title.

• CLEVELAND STATE 73, GREEN BAY 61: Gabriella Smith scored 19 points, and the secondseed­ed Vikings (30-4) beat the topseeded Phoenix (27-5) in Indianapol­is to claim their first Horizon League tournament championsh­ip since 2010.
