Pilots beat Bulldogs to claim WCC title
PORTLAND 64, GONZAGA 60
Maisie Burnham scored 19 points and Alex Fowler had 15 points and 11 rebounds as secondseeded Portland upset top-seeded and two-time defending West Coast Conference tournament champion Gonzaga, 64-60, on Tuesday in Las Vegas to claim the title and NCAA tournament berth.
Portland (23-8) snapped a sixgame losing streak against the No. 16 Bulldogs — with its last win coming in the tournament semifinals during the 2019-20 season. The Pilots won the tournament championship that year before the season was canceled because of the pandemic.
Yvonne Ejim had 21 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out for Gonzaga (28-4). Kayleigh Truong, the WCC player of the year, had 18 points, five assists and three steals — but also seven turnovers.
• UNLV 71, SAN DIEGO STATE 68: Essence Booker scored 22 points, and the No. 21 Rebels (30-2) held off the Aztecs (23-10) in the semifinals of the Mountain West tournament in Las Vegas.
• SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 93, OMAHA 51: Haleigh Timmer scored 13 of her 18 points in the first half, and the top-seeded Jackrabbits (28-5) routed the sixthseeded Mavericks (15-17) in Sioux Falls, S.D., to earn the Summit League tournament title.
• CLEVELAND STATE 73, GREEN BAY 61: Gabriella Smith scored 19 points, and the secondseeded Vikings (30-4) beat the topseeded Phoenix (27-5) in Indianapolis to claim their first Horizon League tournament championship since 2010.
