Protest turns violent in Senegalese capital:

-

Police fired tear gas at stone-hurling protesters in Senegal’s capital on Thursday ahead of a court case involving a prominent opposition politician that has triggered anger among youths. Demonstrators in Dakar burned tires and set fire to buses and a large supermarket. The clashes began when supporters of presidential hopeful Ousmane Sonko were blocked from accompanying his motorcade to a courthouse where he faces trial for libel. Sonko, 48, who came in third in the 2019 presidential election, is also charged with raping a beauty salon employee in 2021 and making death threats against her. He denies wrongdoing.
