Cliveden House

-

Buckinghamshire, England This historic estate an hour outside of London was “tailor-made for romance,” said Keith Flanagan in Town & Country. Once a love nest shared by the 2nd Duke of Buckingham and his mistress, the property was owned by the Astor family when its Italianate mansion became a 20th-century showcase. A major recent renovation has “rendered the estate glamorous anew,” but its past hasn’t been forgotten. The 38 antique-filled rooms are named after famous guests, including T.E. Lawrence and Charlie Chaplin, and the Astors’ gardens and maze have been carefully restored. clivedenhouse.co.uk; doubles from $698
