The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling
Garry Shandling was far from zen. The neurotic stand-up comedian and sitcom innovator was a lifetime seeker, though, and friends knew when he died in 2016 that he had been keeping a semispiritual journal for 40 years. In this two-part documentary portrait, which will air on consecutive nights, director Judd Apatow digs into Shandling’s journals to pull together a portrait of his mentor and the gift of his self-deprecating comedy, with the help of old performance clips and dozens of the comic’s famous friends. Begins Monday, March 26, at 8 p.m., HBO
