Geoff Dyer makes an ideal guide to Garry Winogrand’s photography, said Jennifer Szalai in The New York Times. For this “visually sumptuous” volume, the essayist chose 100 of Winogrand’s images and wrote text that puts them in historical context. Granted, “Dyer can make some dud calls.” But whenever he lets himself “get deeply, comically weird,” as he does in a giddy tangent on sunbathing, “Dyer’s gifts as a noticer become fully apparent.”
