The Week (US) - - 22 Arts - By Michael Palin

Michael Palin’s latest book is “a fugue in many voices,” said Sara Wheeler in The Observer (U.K.). The sad tale of the HMS Erebus has been told many times, but the former Monty Python member “makes it his own,” working in discoveries made since the ship’s wreckage was found in 2014. In 1848, the British warship became trapped in ice while seeking a Northwest Passage, leading to “appalling human suffering.” Even cannibalism couldn’t save any men, and “Palin understands the importance of detail.”
