Copenhagen, Denmark

Create more land: Faced with a shortage of housing and office space, Denmark has announced a mammoth project to build nine artificial islands off the coast of Copenhagen by 2040. Project Holmene (Danish for “islets”) is meant to attract tech firms and, the government hopes, turn the Danish capital into a “new Silicon Valley.” The government said the complex would include 33 million square feet of new land, with space for some 380 new businesses and parks. The Danes are skilled at reclaiming land from the sea. Copenhagen is located on two islands, Zealand and Amager, and both have been expanded over the years.
