Gas shortages: To crack down on the rampant theft of gasoline, Mexico’s state oil company has shut off pipelines and started delivering fuel by tanker truck only, resulting in nationwide shortages and long lines at the pumps. Pemex says that at least $7.4 billion worth of gas has been stolen since 2016, with criminal gangs tapping pipelines and even running hoses out of refineries into their own tanker trucks. “I ask citizens for understanding and support, because we need to solve this problem together,” said Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. “We are trying to get it resolved soon.” His administration has deployed military personnel to guard distribution depots and refineries while the pipelines are repaired.
