Far-right leader attacked: An antiimmigration lawmaker is in the hospital after being bludgeoned by unknown assailants while walking at night in the German city of Bremen. Police said surveillance video shows three men approaching Frank Magnitz—a member of the German parliament and the Bremen leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party—from behind. One of them whacks the 66-year-old on the back of the head, and the three run away as Magnitz falls to the ground unconscious and bleeding. Magnitz said he remembers nothing of the attack, but added, “Without dramatizing it, we can call this an assassination attempt.” AfD leaders blamed “violent leftists” and demanded police protection for their lawmakers.
