USS Cole suspect killed: Jamal al-Badawi, the al Qaida operative accused of organizing the 2000 attack on the USS Cole, was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Yemen last week, the Pentagon confirmed. The Cole was refueling in the Yemeni port of Aden when it was rammed by two suicide bombers in an explosives-laden boat, killing 17 U.S. sailors and wounding 40. Badawi, 50, was captured and sentenced to death in Yemen in 2004 but escaped from Yemeni custody twice, once that year and again in 2007, and the FBI offered $5 million for information leading to his arrest. President Trump tweeted news of the airstrike, saying, “Our GREAT MILITARY has delivered justice for the heroes lost and wounded in the cowardly attack on the USS Cole.”
