Below, six terrific animated series made for adults:

Cowboy Bebop

Probably the best anime series ever made, this neonoir space tale about a crew of galaxy-running bounty hunters is both widely accessible and remarkably layered. Hulu and Netflix

Undone

A young woman recovering from a car crash begins talking to her dead father, who teaches her to manipulate space and time. Beautiful rotoscope animation helps carry this mind-expanding series created by the BoJack Horseman team and costarring Rosa Salazar and Bob Odenkirk. Amazon Prime

Big Mouth

Nick Kroll and John Mulaney’s incredibly funny show about middleschoolers navigating puberty takes scatological humor next-level. It also has an abundance of honesty and heart. Netflix

Rick and Morty

Brilliant. Irreverent. Laughout-loud funny. There’s no place that this series—about an insane scientist who takes his grandson on adventures through alternate realities— can’t, or doesn’t, go. Hulu

Aggretsuko

Don’t let the Hello Kitty look of the animation throw you. This series about a red panda who works out her desk-job frustrations in nightly sessions of death-metal karaoke is as mature in its satire as any workplace comedy. Netflix

The Simpsons

You could stream all 30 seasons (they’re all here) and hope quarantine ends before you’re finished. Better yet, go straight to seasons 3 through 9, when Matt Groening’s half-hour comedy was uproariously funny and socially relevant in ways few animated shows have ever been. Disney+
