Five great series still waiting for you to discover them: Rectify

Maybe you’ve seen glowing reviews of this Sundance series but never gotten around to watching any of its fourseason run. How about now? Aden Young plays a murder convict who returns to his family in rural Georgia after 19 years in prison. From beginning to end, the story of his reintegrat­ion is both heartbreak­ing and beautiful. Halt and Catch Fire

At the dawn of the personalco­mputing revolution, a group of four bright young innovators try to build lives while building the next big thing. Especially from Season 2 on, it’s all impeccably executed, from the Mad Men level of ’80s period detail to the superb performanc­es. Netflix

Red Oaks

If you love Caddyshack, The Wonder Years, and every John Hughes movie, this is the retro dramedy series for you. Set in the mid-’80s, it follows a college film student who’s wondering what future to pursue while spending his summers working as an assistant tennis pro at a New Jersey country club. Amazon Prime Southland

NBC canceled this L.A. police drama after just one promising season before it became even better on TNT. It was never going to be The Wire, but it avoids genre cliché and depicts a modern police force as populated by a range of individual­s who struggle with the ambiguitie­s of their profession. David Simon’s follow-up series never escaped the shadow of that revered portrait of modern Baltimore. But Simon’s love letter to post-Katrina New Orleans is a great watch, crowded with music and characters determined to pick up the pieces. HBO Max
