Ethnic cleansing: Chinese authorities are forcing contraception on tens of thousands of ethnic Uighur and Kazakh women in an attempt to shrink the population of the minority Muslim groups. A report by China scholar Adrian Zenz found that Uighur and Kazakh women in the far western region of Xinjiang are subjected to frequent pregnancy checks and fitted with intrauterine devices or sterilized against their will. Parents with three or more children are sent away to detention camps unless they can pay huge fines. Across Xinjiang, birth rates fell about 24 percent last year, compared with a decline of 4.2 percent nationwide. “They want to destroy us as a people,” said Gulnar Omirzakh, a mother of three who was ordered to have an IUD fitted. More than a million Uighurs have been sent to re-education camps, where they are denied the chance to practice Islam.
