Portland, Ore.
Ignited: Smoke billowed through the sky as protesters set a fire in a police union hall and clashed with cops this week, after a brief lull following the departure of federal officers from the city. The confrontations, in which some protesters allegedly threw rocks and police used tear gas, occurred throughout the week as activists marked their 75th day of demonstrations since the death of George Floyd. Though the fire in the union hall and others in surrounding dumpsters appear to have been set by only a small number of aggressive protesters among larger groups of peaceful activists, police declared the demonstration a riot. Protesters arrested included an organizer of Portland’s “Wall of Moms.” One night, a pipe bomb was hurled at protesters; a former Navy SEAL was reportedly seen walking away from that attack.
