Protests paralyze country: Bolivia’s government has called in the military to quell anti-government protests that over several weeks have brought the country to a standstill. Furious that the rerun of last year’s disputed election—which led to the downfall of leftist President Evo Morales—has been postponed three times, demonstrators have dynamited mountain passes, blocked roads with boulders and burning tires, and staged mass marches. The protests are being led by unions and indigenous and peasant groups allied with Morales’ Movement Toward Socialism party. Caretaker President Jeanine Áñez, a rightwing senator who had promised immediate elections, has delayed the vote until October because of the pandemic. Protesters fear she intends to stay in power.
