Street battles: More than 100 right-wing militia members and Proud Boys squared off this week with demonstrators and antifa last week as Black Lives Matter protests approached a third month. While Portland police looked on, the two groups clashed for two violence-filled hours, beating each other with metal rods, sticks, and bats while also hurling rocks and bottles and spraying noxious chemical solutions across a skirmish line. Both sides wore armor and used makeshift shields. Police said they let the battles continue because they “appeared to involve willing participants” and the police lacked sufficient resources to intervene.

Several combatants were injured, including Dakota Means, a

25-year-old former Marine who took a paintball to the eye. “They’re not welcome in the city,” he said of the far right-wing counter-protesters.

“I’m gonna make sure they’re ran out.”
