Killing protesters: Nigerian security forces opened fire on demonstrators peacefully protesting police brutality this week, killing an unknown number and wounding at least 30. “It was pandemonium, and they kept on shooting and shooting at us,” one witness told the BBC. “Soldiers were actually taking up the dead bodies.” Lagos state Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu initially denied that anyone was killed, but described the incident as one of the “darkest hours from our history as a people.” The protesters had gathered in defiance of an indefinite 24-hour curfew imposed on Lagos and other regions following weeks of mostly peaceful protests. Criminal gangs have taken advantage of the unrest to unleash mayhem, robbing churchgoers and raping women, prompting the governor to call the curfew. Authorities have ordered an investigation into the soldiers’ actions.
