Cancún, Mexico
Shooting demonstrators: Mexican police opened fire on women protesters who were trying to force their way into Cancún’s city hall this week during a protest against a national wave of femicides. Four journalists covering the incident were wounded, including two who were shot. The demonstration was called after authorities found the dismembered body of 20-year-old Bianca “Alexis” Lorenzana, the latest victim in a series of grisly murders of women and girls in the state of Quintana Roo. Her mother had called for a peaceful protest, but during the demonstration she became emotional and told protesters, “Burn it all, because Alexis would have done that for you!” prompting some of the demonstrators to start breaking windows.
