Rebranding fail: The Indian conglomerate Adani is changing the name of its Australian mining division after some exceptionally bad press regarding its coal-mining operations. The company plans to build one of the world’s largest mines near the threatened Great Barrier Reef, a project that would require a massive port expansion and the dredging of 38.8 million cubic feet of seafloor. The project has generated fierce opposition from environmentalists, and this week it was revealed that permits will allow 60 million tons of coal to be mined at the site every year—double the amount the company originally announced. CEO David Boshoff said the company would be renamed Bravus, which he said was Latin for brave, because it “took a lot of courage to get where we are.” In fact, Bravus is Latin for “crooked” or “mercenary.”
