Islamist riots: Pakistani authorities said they will ban the Islamist group Tehreeke-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) after thousands of its members clashed violently with police for several days, beating to death two police officers and wounding more than 340 others. The TLP was outraged over the arrest of its leader, Saad Rizvi. The group has been locked in tense negotiations with the government since last November, when it demanded that Pakistan cut diplomatic ties with France over President Emmanuel Macron’s comments defending the right of a French newspaper to reprint satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed. At the time, the TLP led mass protests and only backed down when lawmakers agreed to consider expelling the French ambassador and barring French imports.

The TLP now says the government broke that agreement.
