Consider it “spring’s most counterintuitive trend.” After a year of living in loungewear while social distancing, women are embracing the corset, the “waist-cinching, bustelevating” garment that has been associated with female torture and oppression for almost six centuries. Some of the credit goes to Bridgerton, the Netflix series about a corseted debutante in Regencyera England. But fashion houses including Alexander McQueen and Fleur du Mal put corsets on runways months earlier. Many of today’s corsets, such as the zip-up top from Christopher John Rogers shown here, favor comfort over binding power. Seen right, it “announces the return of in-person partying.” $1,025, saksfifthavenue.com
