Ukraine recording: Rudy Giuliani relentlessly pressured the Ukrainian government in 2019 to investigate unfounded conspiracy theories about then-candidate Joe Biden, according to a secret recording of a phone call uncovered and released by CNN this week—directly undermining former President Trump’s insistence that there was no “quid pro quo” offer to Ukraine. Days before Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which led to Trump’s impeachment, Giuliani spoke with a top Zelensky adviser, telling him that Zelensky could get a meeting with Trump if he announced a probe into Biden. Zelensky, Giuliani explained, should say, “I’m gonna put an honest prosecutor in charge, he’s gonna investigate and dig up the evidence.” That political favor, added Giuliani, who spent months meeting with Ukrainians in search of material that could be used to damage Biden, would lead to “a much better relationship” between Ukraine and the U.S. Giuliani denies wrongdoing in an ongoing federal probe into his Ukraine dealings.
